M Squared T's Content Management System (CMS) Print E-mail
Written by Matthew M Thomas

M Squared T manages its content through a hybrid mechanism.  The main site, www.msquaredt.com, is driven by a content management system (CMS) called Mambo.  The M Squared T blog, www.msquaredt.com/blog/, is a WordPress driven site.

Why two systems?  There's a little history involved and a little future development involved.
M Squared T began as a blog with the intention to develop into a full web site with other resources back in February 2003.  The original M Squared T was a Blogger-driven site.  In March 2005, M Squared T moved to its own domain and thereafter used WordPress, creating the rest of the content by hand in a text editor.

This solution did not lend itself to developing the rest of the M Squared T site.  Therefore, in July 2005, M Squared T added Mambo to the mix to manage the rest of the content.

Both systems are based on a PHP-MySQL back end and have APIs that lend themselves to integration.  The integration project has not gotten underway at this time, however.  In all likelihood, it will take writing a Plugin for WordPress and a Component for Mambo.

The PHP-MySQL basis for M Squared T allows M Squared T to maintain dynamic content rather than only static HTML.  It also allows for more convenient content manipulation and design.  CSS integrates into PHP to create an easily-transformable site without too much serious back-end work.

M Squared T offers several syndication feeds for use in news aggregators and other content management systems.  Currently, M Squared T offers two different feeds: one for the blog and one for the main site, each in three different forms: RSS, RSS 2.0, and ATOM.  These syndication feeds offer summaries of updated content in near-realtime, allowing news aggregators or live bookmarks to notify subscribers of updated content.  All technical mumbo-jumbo aside, if you use Bloglines (Matt's favorite aggregator) M Squared T can notify you through your aggregator when updates have been made, with a summary of the updated content, rather than you having to go and check periodically.
